Something weird happened with Hayden while they were outside. Laying there in the snow, he’d gone from laughing to somber in a second and a half. Santino could almost see Hayden rebuilding his walls brick by brick, tucking himself safely behind them. Like everything that had passed between them, all the things they’d talked about, none of it had happened.

Then Keith and Carlos pulled up and all hope of sitting Hayden down to talk went up in smoke. They’d shown up with a car full of gear and supplies. Cameras, lights, wardrobe, props. Food that was supposed to have been for the whole weekend. And a goddamn plastic Christmas tree tied to the roof.

“I can’t believe you brought this,” Santino said as they hauled the thing inside.

“Can’t have a Christmas video without a Christmas tree.” Keith waved them toward a spot in the corner. “Right over here. That’s good.”

“Where did you even find one in the middle of October?” Santino held the thing upright while Carlos secured the tree to its stand.

“We rented it.” Keith reached out and ruffled his hair before he could duck away. “Did you think all those Hallmark movies use real trees? There are companies who supply this stuff.”

Carlos grabbed one of the big plastic tubs they’d carried in from the car and brought it to the foot of the tree. It was filled to the brim with Christmas decorations. Lights and garlands, tree ornaments, and a star. Santino dove in without waiting to be told.

He was a fan of Christmas. The lights and the music and the sparkle of magic that always hung in the air. Picking out presents for people and ripping through wrapping paper on Christmas morning. He used to really love it, though. Back when there’d been snow on the ground and his family had gone to chop down their very own tree.

He and Hayden would go tobogganing the day before Christmas. Then back to Santino’s house for hot chocolate and old time-y movies on TV. Santino’s family did their big dinner on Christmas Eve, then they’d change into PJs and fall asleep together in Santino’s bed. The next morning, before the sun came up, they’d run down the stairs and tear into their presents. Hayden’s parents would come pick them up in the afternoon for more presents at their house. Then another big dinner with Hayden’s family and another sleepover in Hayden’s bed.

That was their annual tradition and Santino couldn’t remember ever doing anything else. Until his dad died and he moved to California. He glanced over his shoulder at Hayden who was heating up lunch in the kitchen. Had he continued any of that? The tobogganing? The movies?

It bothered him that he didn’t know. That there was still so much that Hayden hadn’t told him, that they hadn’t had time to share. Like when did he move to New York? Why did he move to New York and not California? What happened with his sister Darby? Did he ever go back home for Christmas?

Santino wanted to know everything.
